Chihuahuas and Other Pets

Most people who own Chihuahuas only own Chihuahuas, and there is a very good reason for this. Chihuahuas simply don’t get along with other pets in most cases, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t get along with pets if they are put into the right situation.
First note that at any age, Chihuahuas will usually fare well with their own breed. Two or more Chihuahuas can get along famously, and will be a great source of companionship for each other when their humans are otherwise occupied. New Chihuahuas can be introduced to the household without a problem in most cases, despite the ages of the other Chihuahuas in the home.
With that said, however, you might note that this is where the Chihuahua’s patience with other pets pretty much ends. Most Chihuahuas will not be tolerant of other pets in the home. Fights will often break out, and the Chihuahua will seldom – if ever – back down…no matter how large or threatening the other pet is.
Again, this doesn’t mean that Chihuahuas and other pets cannot reside peacefully in the same home. The trick to making this happen is to bring the Chihuahua into a home where other pets already exist, as long as those pets are tolerant of other types of pets. The other way to accomplish this is to introduce the pets when they are both very small, so that they ‘grow up together’ so to speak.
The final option for owning more than one type of pet, where a Chihuahua is one of the pets, is to ensure that the two pets cannot come into contact with each other. In many homes, this is not easy, and the owner must choose between one pet and the other. This is often hard for the pet owner to do, and in most cases, they will work hard at finding an alternative solution that allows them to keep both pets.
Your best bet, however, if you want more than one pet is to get another Chihuahua. As stated, this is seldom a problem at all, and is something that amazes Chihuahua experts.
While one Chihuahua would never tolerate a different breed of pet, that same Chihuahua will become best friends with another Chihuahua in the home. They will play together, eat together, and sleep together for their entire lives, with few or no problems. They will also share loyalty to their owner, usually without any jealousy issues as well.
