Puppy Training Tips For House Training

Puppies are so adorable; they can melt anyone’s heart.  They are curious, fun, playful and cuddley and we tend to love every aspect of owning a new puppy until they go potty in the house and then we have to deal with the biggest problem and difficulty of having a new puppy, house training.

House training a puppy can be frustrating and difficult sometimes.  But we all need to recognize that a puppy is still just a baby.  He has not yet learned how to restrain himself and until he reaches the age where he has some of the restraint he will need you to be loving and patient as you spend one on one time with him teaching him what is acceptable.

At the beginning you may need to take your puppy outside as often as 2 to 3 times in an hour.  That may seem like a lot but a little puppy does not yet understand how to control himself and the active playing that most puppies engage in creates urine.  Nighttime may be better as a resting puppy will not need to go out as often.  Do not wake a sleeping puppy just to go outside but rather just make sure and take him out as soon as possible after he awakens.

Consistency is the most important aspect of potty training.  Be consistent in taking him out on his leash to the same place every time.  Be consistent about issuing the same commands such as “potty now” every time.  And be consistent with your lavish praise and special treats when he does finally go.

As you are housetraining your puppy you will need to make sure that the situation is as positive as possible for your puppy.  If he ever develops any fear of your reactions or if he ever feels fear that he is doing something wrong your potty training efforts will take longer.  Your puppy wants to please you and if he does not know how to do that it will take more time for him to learn about potty training.

Using a crate will help you in your potty training when you need to be away from your puppy.  Dogs naturally try to keep their own space clean so a crate will help your puppy to learn how to control himself.  Dogs are also natural den animals so they enjoy having a small space of their own.

Consistency is the most important aspect of training.  Make sure that you use a consistent command and take him to the same spot every outing so that there is no confusion on his part.  Making the experience a positive one for him will also help him to learn faster and you will be finished with your potty training sooner.

In a few short weeks your house training will be done and you will no longer have to be concerned about accidents in the house.  House training is the most important aspect of having a new puppy but it can be much easier than you expect if you are consistent and positive.
